Oscar Pistorius to Begin Parole Duties

As infamous paralympic sprinter Oscar Pistorius re-enters the world, many South Africans are wondering what community services he will be participating in.

The 37-year-old former Olympic runner was released from the Atteridgeville Correctional Centre in Pretoria, Gauteng on Friday, 5 January, after serving eight years of his 13-year prison sentence for murdering his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.

Pistorius will be staying in his uncle’s lavish mansion in the upmarket suburb of Waterkloof in Pretoria, Gauteng for the remainder of his sentence until 2029. The athlete will still need to perform his community service as per his parole agreement.

One publication reported on Sunday, 7 January, that the sprinter had been offered the opportunities to “clean a local hospital, auxiliary duties at a police station, or return to prison to help warders with maintenance.”

However, according to the same news outlet, Pistorius has requested to volunteer at the local Dutch Reformed Church, where he could end up washing the floors and parking cars for the congregation.

As of yet, parole officers have not decided whether they will grant his request, or whether they will demand a harsher task, as many South Africans have suggested that Pistorius deserves.
